Every year on May 21, all the Ionian Islands, including Corfu, celebrate the anniversary of their Union with Greece.
The event is celebrated with a morning parade (11 am) in the city center by students and members of diverse associations accompanied by the Corfiot Bands throughout the island.
In August there are many Religious feasts around the island, they are spread around the villages to celebrate the village’s church name.
The biggest feast takes place on August 15, when the Virgin Mary name day is celebrated all around the island.
Prior to the Festival there is the procession with the Epitaph of Virgin Mary, which is decorated by local ladies.
Birdwatch takes place everyyear on the firstweekend of October in all Europe. This is the initiativeof the NGOBirdlife International,whichdevotesits actionto the birdsandtheenvironment.
The Ornithological Society and the Environmental Education Center of Corfu organizes the event with the appropriate equipment and proper guidance in Alikes Lefkimmis, classified as "Special Protection Area for Birds" and one of the most important station for rest and refueling of the migration route (flyway) of the Ionian - Adriatic.
This popular event that takes place every year on the nearby village of Benitses.
Benitses is traditionally a fishing village and continues today to be the point where one can eat fresh fish.
In August local fishermen takes a large amount of fresh sardines and introduce it to this Sardine Festival where sardines are grilled and offered for free with ouzo and wine.
The festival is accompanied with dances and songs by traditional groups and the party lasts until dawn.
