POSIDONIA

A Submerge Treasure...

Posidonia oceanica was named after the ancient God of Sea Poseidon or Neptune. The plant spreads its roots in a dense formation resembling grass, that is sometimes referred to as Posidonia meadow or Posidonia forest. The analogy to a forest is not an exaggeration because the veryexistence of Posidonia guarantees a rich ecosystem were life and diversity truly thrive.

Posidonia oceanica is characterized from the long ribbon like leaves that sprout from the center of a woody root. Plants grow by replacing old leaves with new. Old leaves remain attached but are pushed to the sides, were they subsequently decompose and reveal their inner structural fibers, that give the characteristic appearance of a paintbrush.

Posidonia meadows are an important environmental quality indicator. Healthy meadows translate automatically to healthy fish stocks and unpolluted waters. It is not an overstatement to claim that human activities such as fishing, and tourism have their future bound to the meadows.

The Mediterranean touristic sector is greatly dependent on the Posidonia meadows since, one of the main advantages of a holiday destination, is the quality of the sea. Healthy meadows ensure attractive beaches, easy to swim in and to explore with snorkeling and diving.
